Registry Set Coins are coins that are registered with either PCGS or NGC (the major third parties) that verified the quality and ownership of coins in a set.
Registry set was formed by David Hall, and since have become a very popular and competitive area for the very serious collector. The registry set increases the price and competitiveness of the coins in a set. Often common coins are priced much higher because they are a part of a desirable registry set.
PCGS and NGS have since enabled sharing and displaying online of a collectors registry set. This drives the very competitive nature of registry sets. PCGS for example even gives awards for best all time registry set collection. This is the driving force behind the community of collectors that registry sets has created.
