Silver

buy-silver-bullionLike gold and other precious metals, Silver can be used as an investment.  For over four thousand years, silver has been regarded as a form of money as well as a store of value.  Silver was the standard for paper currency in the US and many other countries until fairly recently in history.  With the end of the silver standard in 1971, it lost its status as a legal tender in many countries including the U.S.  Currently silver is in high demand for its industrial applications as well as jewelry, bullion and Exchange Traded Products (ETPs).  Millions of American Silver Eagle coins and Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins are purchased by investors every year.  In fact, the Silver Maple Leaf is legal tender at $5 an ounce.  In Utah, silver remains legal tender and can be used to pay all debts.

Silver is often referred to as “poor man’s gold” due to its lower prices than gold.  Silver prices often track gold prices with the average gold/silver price ratio being 47:1 during the 20th century.  “Like gold, silver tends to perform well during periods of quantitative easing as investors search for real assets to hold.” (www.ft.com). A diversified investment portfolio is always recommended.  Silver is an excellent addition to your portfolio as many fund managers are predicting that it has the potential to provide big profits in the coming years.  If you are looking for diversification away from equities as well as a hedge against inflation, holding physical silver is one of the safest forms of exposure.

Silver can be purchased as an investment vehicle in many forms.  Bullion bars come in a number of weights and sizes.  The flat rectangular shape makes them ideal for storage in a home safe or safe deposit box as well as pooled high security storage through your dealer.  Silver coins and rounds can be purchased, as well as ETPs, Certificates, Accounts, Derivatives and shares in Mining companies.
